Sometimes...

2 min read
...what you need is right in front of your face, hiding in plain sight.

For the first time in a looooong time, I feel competent.  I have something to hang on to, someONE to learn from.  Where did I find it?  Why, on YouTube, of all places.  Let me explain...

Three days ago, I was paddling around in my studio, wishing I could have had the scratch to attend the Feng Zhu Design School.  Let's get real:  I'll probably never have that kind of money, and there will be NO MORE student loans for me.  Well, I happened to follow a link from Facebook to a tutorial that Mr. Zhu posted.  Doing that led me to THE MOTHERLODE.  Turns out, Feng Zhu believes in sharing information, not hoarding it.  He also believes that just because someone lacks money they shouldn't be denied knowledge.  Turns out Feng Zhu is a man after my own heart.

Since then, I've been busy every day, taking in his lessons, then turning around and applying them immediately.  It may not show, but I feel more competent to create than I was three days ago.  I've learned a lot in just three days!  I haven't tried everything I've learned yet, but I'm going to - it feels so good to approach my machine without the ghosts that have haunted me since my days in videogames.  No haters, no jealous folks, no mockery - just learning, absorbing new techniques and finally figuring out how to do digital art RIGHT.

The Creator sends us where we need to go, when we need to be there.  I'm wasting no time wishing I'd found FZD sooner.  THIS was the right time, the right place.  And though this piece ain't where I want it to be, I know I can come back to it and finish at any time.  Until that day comes, I'm gonna keep on studying, and become the greatest Pokemo - (ahem) artist I can be!  Come with me... ^_^

I just read LeSean's latest offering, and watched this video.

I want to add the following:  THIS HAPPENS AT ALL LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT, from big companies to individual clients.  Worse, IT'S SPREADING.  People I have respect for pull this shit, much to their shame.  Don't be surprised when you get blamed for not buying into this kind of thing, and doing what's necessary to protect yourself from being scammed.  There are those who view me as "hard to work with".  Well, fuck'em.  If keeping everything above-board, and maintaining open lines of communication is being "hard to work with", then I'm damn proud of it.  At least I'm willing to put myself on the line, rather than leaving others to twist in the wind and then screaming about things not getting done.

I am fast reaching the conclusion that most people aren't worth working with.  Rare is the individual who actually has a plan, let alone done the groundwork necessary to successfully implement their plan.  Instead, it's "Hi, I've got mindless ambition - won't you realize it for me, without any input from me other than bullshit office politics and the promise of payment on the (as yet unspecified) back-end?"

Thus, I am forwarding Stephen Silver's video. This bullshit has GOT TO STOP.

...and I'm along for the ride!

I will keep you apprised of things as I can, but things are happening.  I'm excited about it, and I look forward to sharing it with you.

Meanwhile, in the "read any good books?" department, everyone needs to read "Crystal Rain", "Ragamuffin" and "Sly Mongoose", by Tobias S. Buckell.  They are the best SF books, let alone space operas, I've read in a looooooong time.  They also have some of the best characterizations I've ever come across - I keep casting the movies in my head, but there are so many great roles I'm not sure who's the best fit.

The galaxy in these books is a rough place.  That said, it looks like humans can handle it!

I can't recommend these books enough.  They're superior to David Brin's Uplift series (that's right - I said it!), and on a par with Peter F. Hamilton's "Night's Dawn" and Commonwealth series.  Go GET THESE BOOKS!!!
